In Lane’s chapter on “The Ordinary as Mask of the Holy” he talks about how we don’t see the mundane and ordinary things all the time but this is more readily seen by artists and storytellers than scholars, philosophers or theologians. We seek “the mask that invests with power and life” because we want to know what is behind the mask. We search for what is hidden behind the mask just for a glimpse of the profound. The mask of the God could be in any ordinary thing, a tree or flower, a great mountain, the love of a mother or father towards their children. Through all these things we see a glimpse of God, whether it’s his love, his beauty or his majesty. He reveals and conceals himself through these masks.
