CJ Fitchett: Personal Experience 2

My hometown of Mahopac, New York has provided me with numerous experiences among wilderness. One of the most memorable occurred over the winter break of 2008. In winter the weather is so cold that the lakes and ponds freeze over. They freeze thick enough that people race trucks, ATV's, and other off-road vehicles over them. I, on the other hand, prefer pond hockey and ice skating to motor vehicles. It pains me to not be able to play hockey at CNU due to my academic obligations, but whenever there is an academic break it is safe to say that you will find me at my local rink skating until nighttime.
One particular occasion I woke up bright and early in order to get a skate in before work. Snow was falling lightly, and as the sun rose it created a picturesque seen at Lake Casse, a mere two minute drive from my home. The reflection of the sunrise was seen clearly in the glassy ice. I took to the ice, hockey stick in hand, and within a couple minutes I heard an extremely loud grunting sound. I turned towards it and witnessed one of the largest deer I have ever seen. It continued to stare me down, as if trying to converse. It was almost as if the buck was acknowledging the beautiful scene before us. As I began to skate towards it, it let out one last sound, slowly turning to walk away. What amazed me the most was that the deer was not threatened one bit by my presence. It merely made its presence known, and slowly descended back into the forest. This was a truly special experience among wilderness that I will not soon forget.
