“Flow,” as described in Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture is a holistic sensation “that people feel when they act with total involvement. Among these conditions is the centering of attention on a limited stimulus field.” This seems like a beneficial and beautiful idea. The flow of total involvement in pilgrimages, sports, and the arts can all be incredible to witness and even more astounding to be a part of. Being a part of flow means that you have reached an unconscious competence and that you don’t have to think about it. In fact thinking about it will inevitably break the flow.
Flow of something negative, however, can magnify those effects. Think of the Hitler Youth, and all the Nazis. They got so caught up in the flow that they didn’t question or think. They were totally involved in and immersed into their cause, which exponentially increased the effects of these causes. The youth especially were brainwashed to focus all of their attention on the limited stimulus that Hitler’s trainings allowed.
