Reading “The Mountain That Was God” inspired me to think about how faith is a funny thing. It allows us to put beside our judgmental, rational minds. In this class, many of us have no problem hearing that a mountain “was God” or that it had a perspective, or many other things that might otherwise seem dubious. Many people think that pet rocks are silly; imagine how ridiculous the idea of that rock being God would be to the skeptics and rationalists that seem to be most prevalent in our culture.
If someone claimed they were God today, if they started gathering apostles, if they claimed to be able to perform miracles, they would be considered crazy, or at minimum people would think of them as a cult leader—a crook who wanted to take advantage of the innocent, naïve, and faithful of the world. Yet, a huge portion of the United States population believes that Jesus Christ was (and is) God. Why? I asked several Christians what the difference was, and ended up hearing leaps of faith. One claimed that it was simply because He is God. Another asserted that it says so in the Bible, which is the word of God. No matter how it is explained, I think one respondent summed it up best, saying “you just have to believe it.”
