Nate Morris - Reading Review - Turner 2

In the book, Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, Turner attempts to establish a working definition for the word Pilgrimage, in the context of sacred place, one which will describe it effectively and capture its importance to the individual. In his efforts, Turner has declared that Pilgrimage, when referring to a journey to and from sacred place, is best known as exteriorized mysticism, one which harbors an intense communion, feeling of union, with God. And example of this type of pilgrimage would be the well known journey embarked upon by many in the Islamic faith; the journey of the Hajj. This trek takes Muslims through a harrowing and grueling set of ordeals which culminate in a spiritual experience that is likely unparalleled in any other faith, bringing these individuals close to the God they love.
