Nate Morris - Reading Review - Turner 3

In his book, Turner describes and delineates between the two terms community and communitas. In his research, Turner has determined that the notion of community refers to an structured form of society, much like an organization, whereas communitas refers to an unstructured form of society, such as a friend group, that can often arise from hardships. Communitas works to create flowing and changing relationships that reflect openness and a sense of communion with all other members. The intimacy of a communitas group allows for the group to integrate into all aspects of nature and society, while the community group, while tight knit and necessary, does not offer this type of free flowing exchange between members.
