Aaron Hackett topic of Choice 1: Existentialism

Today’s class was one of the most interesting to me. During class we heard about existentialism and concepts. Part of this lecture focused on becoming a true self. I would like to discuss this because I believe it relates to what I will eventually include in my final paper and is just plain interesting. The theory is that you will never be a true self, instead constantly working to become a true self. Later, existentialism is identified in the movie Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. It seems that the idea of a soul mate is an interruption to becoming a true self. This is due to the fact that when you say that you have found your soul mate you have set boundaries for yourself and that person. You think that that other person completes you. This poses a problem because people are constantly changing and what you have pinned that person down as being will not be true forever or may not even be true at that moment. That person will no longer complete you as soon as they manifest qualities that you disagree with. Instead, relationship should be formed based on the fact that you are both moving along the process of becoming a true self. Experiencing each other as concepts in a relationship will not last due to the inevitable fact that the relationship is based on trying to confine something that is forever changing. I found this very interesting and will try to incorporate it into my relationships.
