Becki Image and Pilgrimage 2

Communitas has been a large part of our discussions. In Appedix A of the book, It is described as “spontaneous… the wind which bloweth where it listeth” meaning it has no social structure. When one is on a pilgrimage the status given by society is no longer relevant. All pilgrims have the same status. There is no leader, no follower, no poor or rich, there is simply a community of people sharing and experiencing together when they are on their pilgrimage. This lack of structure is a unique setting for most people and is an incredibly interesting moment or state of being to study as it does not follow our societal norms. Communitas can also exist in society and is best seen when the lowly and mighty might reverse roles.
