Becki Image and Pilgrimage 3
Flow. What is it? How does one define it? Do we describe the way a river moves? In Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture by Turner and Turner, Flow is defined in Appendix A as the holistic sensation present when we act with total involvement, just as a musician who is completely into playing would just continue on and on without thinking about what exact notes they are playing. The river flows because all of its water is completely involved in moving, it follows a ravine already created by the previous part of the river. No part of the river decides to stop moving all of a sudden, there is no thought required. The river is completely involved. This can happen to pilgrims on a pilgrimage when they loose their ego and find themselves to be irrelevant. They become so focused on their journey that they seem to walk without thought.
