One book I have read numerous times that relates extremely well to the discussion of sacred place is the novel "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse. The novel deals with the spiritual journey of a young boy named Siddhartha as he travels in search of enlightenment. Siddhartha meets many people and experiences many things on his travels, but he is never quite satisfied with his experiences. He goes through many changes and realizations before becoming ultimately satisfied being a ferryman on a river. Siddhartha has an epiphany along this river after many years of travels, and finally finds himself at peace among its beauty.
The novel is especially representative of spiritual experience and ritual. Siddhartha travels to numerous places partaking in rituals and experiencing various religious traditions.
