Daniel Blakely Landscapes of the Sacred 2

Lane discusses 3 different approaches to the sacred. I believe that the most interesting is the Cultural approach. When reading through the section, my mind was stuck on the cultural approach. I do not fully understand how this is not simply the ontological approach. I must be misunderstanding something along the way. The ontological approach discusses the “supernatural” and “chthonic power” however it is simply the understanding of the primitive ancestors. Those ancestors then passed down their understanding of sacred, and so on and so forth, until it reaches the present. Does that not sound like culture to anyone else? In my opinion, the cultural approach is simply an evolution of the ontological approach, as in a sort of shift from one to the other over time.
