Douglas Pelenberg: Outside Reading
In Cold Fever the journey that Hirata takes leads him through many situations where he learns about sacred space. All four of Lane’s axioms are referenced in some way throughout the movie, and all of them build upon Hirata’s understanding of the sacred. In some way, shape or form this movie can be examined using any of Lane’s three approaches. Each gives a unique perspective on sacred place and its role in Hirata’s journey throughout the film. As Lane uses these techniques to help others understand sacredness, Hirata in essence does the exact same thing. It is through these axioms and approaches that we can get a glimpse how others interpret sacred space.
