Gianandrea Heyer : community vs communitas

In his book, Thurner describes the difference between communitas and community. In communitas, every single person is at the same hierarchical level, and nobody is more valuable for the community, everybody is at the same level. We can define communitas as a community without structure. Community on the other hand has well defined hierarchies. We live in an hierarchical social structure since we were born. In our community individuals are placed according to their skill level and social values. Community is structured, like in the Egyptian caste system where Pharaohs are at the top,and peasants are down at the bottom.
