Joseph Rivera: Image and Pilgrimage 3
One subject in Turner’s book that I think I have the biggest understanding of because I have experienced it personally is the idea of communitas. Communitas is relational quality of full unmediated communication, even communion, between definite and determinate identities, which arises spontaneously in all kinds of groups, situations, and circumstances. I think the idea of communitas is incredible because when it happens there is an unspoken bond between the group that everyone seems to understand but no one brings up in conversation. Everyone seems to click and fill a role that is vital to the group. This tends to happen in the wilderness but by definition above it is expected to happen in all aspects of society. My question is that is communitas something similar to what is experience on sports teams? Where there is a bond between the players and the all seem to get along and have a special connection.
