Kyle Shipe: Pilgrimage

Turner's book Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture really opened my eyes to what rituals were really all about. I did not realize all the types of pilgrimages that existed. From prototypical pilgrimages to modern pilgrimages each one had a specific view of ritual and a specific way of existing as a pilgrimage. I learned that a pilgrimage is a type of journey that requires an open mind and courage. As someone sets out on a pilgrimage they don't know exactly what is going to happen along the way, and that is when the magic happens. Many people embark on pilgrimages in search of healing for some tragic or sad event in their life. They hope that after the pilgrimage they will be restored and have peace. Turner's book provided great detail on the history of pilgrimage and many different types and facts.
