When we were first told that we were going on the Noland trail to reflect I was skeptical that I would experience anything considered “sacred.” I had been on the trail before and spent time near the Lion’s Gate Bridge and had never felt anything special so I did not think anything would be different this time around. However, this was not the case; I was able to experience something I had not felt before even though I had been at this very location several times before. I began my reflection time on the trail, and remember passing by several different types of trees and plants, some were green showing signs of life, while others displayed beautiful colors of red and yellow, indicating fall was here. I had walked a decent amount on the trail and decided to head back toward the bridge. On my way back I remember passing by one of the miniature bridges that allows you to overlook a small part of Lake Maury. I stopped briefly not thinking anything of it, but what I saw mesmerized me. I looked out and saw a small pile of sticks and branches that had formed a small extension from the bank of the lake. On top of the branches was a Blue Heron. The magnificent bird was standing perfectly still with its head pointed directly at the water. Although the Heron never moved a muscle, it seemed so majestic standing in the sunlight looking into the water. Overall I had a good experience on the trail.
