Samson Girma- Communitas
We learned from Turner that the feeling of communitas comes from being with others in an unstructured group where everyone is equal. These people who all share things in common, whether it be a lifestyle or a particular mission, can work and live together as a cohesive unit. The people going through this are often in a liminal state. The great thing about communitas is that no one is above anyone else. Then moment someone does ascend to a rank and begins to order others in this leadership role, the idea of communitas is gone. What I’m wondering though is if there can be multiple layers of communitas. We belong to many groups and possibly a number of small communities so can our participation in these different groups all be considered communitas? Communitas comes and goes so I also wonder what the longest types of communitas are.
