Samson Girma- Liminality
When discussing Turner’s text and the idea of liminality, I thought of how college for me has been a liminal experience. We discussed that it an experience of being in the middle of a transitional phase. Here at CNU I am going through the three phases of the rites of transition. I left my home, where I’ve lived all my life and am accustomed to, and came down to school to live away from my family amongst a group of just as “young and dumb,” confused peers. Not until graduate can I go back home and return to my precollege status and way of life, right now my life revolves around where I am in school. Turner notes that “liminality is not only transition but also potentiality, not only ‘going to be’ but also ‘what may be.’” We’re all here searching for what meaning to put to our lives and trying to figure out where we want to go next and what to do now to get there. All the students here are nothing but potential waiting to pursue whatever we decide to pursue.
