6. Mount Rainier Lane Daniel Sharp

In Lane’s book he refers to Mount Rainier as possibly being a mask of the Holy. The Native Americans called it Tahoma, which translates to the mountain that was god. Mountains have for many cultures been viewed as places of the Gods. Whether it is the example of Mount Rainier or the classic example of Olympus being the home of the Gods mountains have always had sacred connotations. When it comes to mount Rainier it is by far the most distinguishable geographic feature in its entire region. It is one of the most sudden gains in elevation in the entire world making it more jaw dropping than almost all geographic features the world has to offer. The raw power of the mountain and even its glaciers reminds of how weak and small people really are. It allows people to view the power of God and experience the sublime through nature. This serves as a mask of the holy because it puts the power of God into something we can actually comprehend.
