In Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture by Victor and Edith Turner, the idea of communitas is presented. Turner says communitas is a relational quality of full unmediated communication and communion between identities. Communitas arrises spontaneously in all groups and situations and creates a sense of comradship. In addition, communitas liberates individuals from conformity and creates openness while removing social structure. Communitas has been found in many situations but has been commonly found in hikers from the appalachian trial and other areas throughout the world.
