Crystal Kernan #9 Outside Reading
Mother Earth Spirituality, by Ed McGaa, is about Native American spirituality and basically their way of living. Native American culture and wisdom has always been interesting to me. I enjoyed this book because it was like a basic introductory to Native American Indian spirituality. For a student trying to learn and comprehend a new cultural approach and others customs, it makes it easier to start with a book with simple terms and clear explanations. This book also included information on Native American rituals and ceremonies, such as the Sun Dance performed at Devils Tower every year in the month of June. I was able to learn a great deal of information on the Sun Dance from the book and incorporate it into my research paper. The buffalo is a major symbolic influence in this ritual and surprisingly was considered part of the Native American culture. It was like the buffalo was a member of the tribe and worshipped because of their many uses.
