Changes in Camping

Camping has changed considerably from the time I was young to now, and I am only 22 years old. When I was in Boy Scouts when we went camping everything was done the traditional way, wood was cut with an ax, heat made with a fire, and entertainment was whatever games we could think of, but electronics were slim to none. The only type of electronics we had were flashlights. In today’s time camping is overrun with electronics, generators, televisions, a/c units, campers, what happened to tents? When people go camping they pretty much take a small version of a house, they might make a fire but other than that, camping has changed dramatically.

How do you interact with nature when you find a way to seclude yourself from it while visiting it? It doesn’t make much sense to go camping in the first place. There is nothing more annoying than hearing someone’s generator running all night in the summer, so that they can run their air conditioning. Not to mention how bad it is for the environment to burn fuel all night. What is perceived as comfort has taken priority over the enjoyment of experiencing nature. The type of camping I am describing relates to Lane’s axiom, you can tred on a place without entering it, and that is exactly what these people are doing. They scratch the surface without even getting the full experience that nature and wilderness has to offer.
